RYA Young Sailors Scheme

Designed for youngsters aged 8-16, the RYA Young Sailors’ Scheme provides courses with the emphasis on learning in a fun environment.

Stage 1 (Beginners)

2 days (4 Sessions) 0930-1630 hrs
Develops basic sailing skills and water confidence. By the end of the course you will have a basic understanding of how a boat sails and some experience of steering and handling the boat. For dates and prices please view our brochure

Stage 2 (Novice)
 
3 days (6 sessions)  0930–1630 hrs
Start to develop independent sailing skills. This course will offer you a range of sailing skills and background knowledge and you’ll be well on your way to being a confident small boat sailor.

Stage 3 (Intermediate)
3 days(6 sessions) 0930–1630 hrs
Having completed Stage Three you will be able to sail in any direction and rig and launch your boat.
Your skills and knowledge will mean you are no longer a beginner, but a sailor.  You must hold Stage 2 to do this course.

Stage 4 (Advanced)

3 Days (6 sessions) 0930–1630 hrs
This is the final stage in the Young sailors Scheme. Successful completion means you have the skills to sail a double–handed boat as crew or helm and solve a variety of problems afloat.

Sailing Development Sessions

After the summer holidays we will run a series of development sessions on Saturday afternoons to help young people build on the knowledge gained over the summer.

Advanced Skills & Race Training
Once dinghy sailors have reached Young Sailors Scheme Stage 4, there are various modules to develop skills in line with interests.  DWSC offers these modules either through courses or individual tuition, as required.

SEAMANSHIP  2 days (0930hrs to 1630hrs)
This aims at increase self-reliance and decision-making skill and also provides instruction in sailing theory, capsize recovery and meteorology. 

SAILING WITH SPINNAKERS  2 days (0930hrs to 1630hrs)
This course will provide the knowledge and skills needed to rig and sail a dinghy with a spinnaker to enhance the boat’s performance and increase your enjoyment.

RACE TRAINING DAYS
An opportunity for novice or experienced sailors to develop their dinghy racing skills and discover a whole new fun-packed and thrilling side to their sailing. (in preparation for the Invicta Winter Series)
